I started the last pick with a story. It was a fun story about a Crocs sandal. If you are a new Multi, I hope you have checked the previous pick here. The stock has been up, down, up again and right now exactly flat from where it was two weeks ago. So, you have not missed anything so far. However, to clarify, this is a long-term holding, just like all the others in our picks.

Let me be clear, though, like Warren Buffett, my favorite holding period is forever. Many investors and even more traders see this as never selling, but that’s not the case. Not for Buffett and not for me. It means that everything goes according to the investment thesis and you can just hold.

This week, David Gardner’s book Rule Breaker Investing was published and Gardner has done this. He has 7 (!) stocks that went up more than 100 times from his cost basis. His Nvidia and Amazon positions, both with a cost basis of a split-adjusted $0.16, are more than 1000-baggers. Yes, that means every $5K grew into $5M and more. That’s the power of holding the best stocks over time. And that’s also what I want to do with Potential Multibaggers.

I'd like to start this article with a story as well, but it's a nightmare scenario for many involved in cybersecurity.

Hi Multis

It's been a while since I launched a new Potential Multibaggers pick. I've been picking Potential Multibaggers since May 2017 and I've noticed that I've become stricter in my criteria over time.

But I also have to acknowledge that there will always be risks. For every investment and even more for Potential Multibaggers.

Because of 2022 and the butchering in growth stocks back then, and especially the many that didn't recover from the fastest rise in interest rates ever, risks have become much more important for me.

When I look at the companies that have done the best (think Shopify, Nu Bank, Duolingo, Cloudflare, CrowdStrike, etc.), one noticeable thing sets them apart from the companies that didn't make it: the people. The best companies have exceptional CEOs.

But exceptional CEOs are often not easy to find. It often takes time to get to know them and to see how good they are.

In that sense, this new Potential Multibagger is a classic one. Yes, it's the company, it's the huge total addressable market, it's a technology advantage that not everybody sees, it's riding a long-term trend, but especially, I liked this CEO from the start and he saw something that few saw that early.

Moreover, just like Tobi Lütke started Shopify to power his own online snowboard shop, this CEO had a personal interest in starting his company and it was even a much better one than that of Tobi Lütke.

Just like a typical Potential Multibagger, the stock has been on a very volatile trajectory. These are the drawdowns. As you can see, the stock is currently 44% below its recent high just two months ago.

Before we start, I want to point out that have an advantage over you. That advantage is that I have already done the research and I have not just done that in the last few weeks but for months already, and much more intensely in the last few weeks. After all, this stock has been on my Stocks On My Radar list since mid-2024.

That means that I'm probably in a different place than you are right now when it comes to research and conviction. That means it may take a while before you are convinced about this pick. That's OK. I always scale into positions over time, so I will also do that with the new Potential Multibaggers pick.

Of course, there's always the possibility that the company will fail for one reason or another. It's essential to have the conviction to hold on if a stock has a drop, and there will be many reasons why our stocks will see big drops from time to time. Some of those reasons will sound very convincing. That's why it may be wise to either wait for the next article or to only buy a small starter position.

But enough introduction. Let's go to the new pick.

I’ve been picking Potential Multibaggers since May 2017, when I picked Shopify as the first Potential Multibagger at a (split-adjusted) price of $7.74.

Shopify now trades at $117.37 (closing price on December 11, 2024). That means it’s more than a 15-bagger already. But when it comes to investing in Potential Multibaggers, this is even more applicable than for investing in general.

Just look at the drawdowns that I had to endure to see a 15-bagger for my Shopify investment. As you can see, the stock is still 30% under its all-time high set at the end of 2021.

The stock dropped by almost 85% in less than a year.

Ouch…

Or not?

Well, that’s when the REAL value of Potential Multibaggers shines through, I think.

I know the companies I pick very well, and I keep learning about them quarter after quarter after quarter.

The goal of Potential Multibaggers is 10x over 10 years. That’s a much longer period than everyone thinks and especially in this clickbaity world full of noise, it’s not simple to separate the short and the long term. Does something have an influence for the next few quarters or is it something that fundamentally changes the investment case?

Next to knowledge, there’s another tool I use to separate noise from signal: patience. I will always err on the side of holding my stocks too long. You could have sold Netflix during the Qwikster debacle in 2011, when the stock dropped 77% in just four months. Sometimes, companies make mistakes, but the best reverse them as fast as they implement them. Netflix did, and the stock is a 27-bagger from its price before the big drop.

All of this is just to give you some insight in the nature of multibaggers. Chris Mayer studied 365 100+baggers in his great book 100 Baggers.

By the way, I highly recommend this book!

Every single 100-bagger (all 365!) had at least one 50% drop. Almost all of them multiple times and the big majority had a drop of 75% at least ones, often multiple times.

So, expect volatility, expect losers, but also expect some really rewarding multibaggers!

The First Pick

Here, I will NOT give you picks from the past, only picks that I think have the opportunity to go 10x over the next 10 years. I have multiple great multibaggers that I still like but are maybe not 10x material anymore going forward. Now, of course, if the stock would go 7x instead of 10x, I think you would still not cry. :-)

Picking a new Potential Multibagger is always a mix of thrill and uncertainty. As I showed, investing in high-potential companies is rarely smooth sailing, but your patience can be rewarded. But for that patience, you need knowledge. That’s why I always write 5 extensive articles, spread over time.
